Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) CEO John Stumpf has been making the media rounds of late, with the housing market on his mind. Stumpf leaves no question about his viewpoint on the subject; Stumpf, and by extension Wells, think that U.S. housing is back.

Putting your money where your mouth is
"Housing for two-thirds of Americans is still the American Dream. I'm bullish on housing."

This quote puts Wells Fargo's view on housing in no uncertain terms. And Wells' financial statements back up that sentiment. Wells' biggest business is mortgage lending, contributing 26% of total non-interest income in the first quarter. That was the sixth consecutive quarter of mortgage production greater than $100 billion.

Stumpf estimates that the size of the U.S. mortgage market is about $10 trillion, or roughly the equivalent of all the nation's bank deposits combined. Stumpf contends that a market this huge can't exist without both a strong secondary market and some government involvement (probably some tweaked format to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac). Without the secondary markets and government, banks simply don't have the funding to meet public demand at a reasonable price. Remember Econ 101: The same demand with less supply would lead to higher prices.

    The numbers for NFLX tell a very clear story - streaming is growing, while the older domestic DVD segment is declining. I believe technology is the main cause for this shift. Broadband internet has become far more common since NFLX first started, and consumers now have access to far cheaper internet plans with faster speeds and higher data allocations. That allows them to stream television shows with ease, and watch shows immediately. Having a DVD sent in the mail is, by comparison, slow, expensive and cumbersome. We have already seen how the internet has affected traditional video-rental stores such as Blockbuster from DISH Network (DISH). Just like the music industry (where record stores and album sales were dominant before internet use was widespread), the industry for NFLX has changed substantially since its inception, and NFLX has to recognize these changes and adapt.

    Leading the charge is cable operator Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) again found itself in the spotlight, up 9.6%, following the completion of its sale of Optimum West to Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) for $1.625 billion. Comcast (CMCSA) (CMCSK), the parent company of CNBC, is not in active discussions on deal terms with Time Warner Cable (TWC), these sources say, but is asking for guidance on antitrust and telecommunications-related issues. According to people familiar with the matter, TWC has made it clear that if it should sell itself, Comcast would be its preferred buyer. These people add that Comcast has been quietly mulling a merger with TWC for some time. The cable operator is on the verge of a bid from Charter Communications (CHTR), according to The Wall Street Journal, which said Charter is near an agreement with banks for the funds to make that offer. Analysts, however, say Time Warner's needs may be better suited with Comcast. "The synergies are very real, and Comcast would be a better fit," said Craig Moffett, founder and senior analyst at MoffettNathanson. He said that while the Department of Justice's anti-trust requirements may not pose an insurmountable challenge, the more stringent litmus test might come from the Federal Communications Commission.

The company announced Thursday that the man currently occupying that position, and that of chairman, Glenn Britt, will step down from both posts at the end of this year.
