Onconova Therapeutics Inc (ONTX) Reached the 3-year Low of $4.18

The prices of Onconova Therapeutics Inc (ONTX) shares have declined to close to the 3-year low of $4.18, which is 86.8% off the 3-year high of $31.13.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Onconova Therapeutics (ONTX), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, focuses on discovering and developing small molecule drug candidates to treat cancer. This stock closed up 2.5% to $5.15 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $4.97-$5.19

    52-Week Range: $4.10-$31.13

    Thursday's Volume: 132,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 216,102

From a technical perspective, ONTX trended modestly higher here with lighter-than-average volume. This stock has been uptrending over the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $4.10 to its recent high of $5.52. During that uptrend, shares of ONTX have been making mostly higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now pushed shares of ONTX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if ONTX manages to take out Thursday's intraday high of $5.19 to some more key overhead resistance at $5.52 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ONTX as long as it's trending above some near-term support levels at $4.80 or at $4.50 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 216,102 shares. If that breakout gets underway soon, then ONTX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $5.83 to $6.27. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give ON! TX a chan! ce to tag $7.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

One under-$10 clinical-state biopharmaceutical player that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Onconova Therapeutics (ONTX), which focuses on discovering and developing small molecule drug candidates to treat cancer. This stock has been destroyed by the short-sellers so far in 2014, with shares off sharply by 56%.

If you glance at the chart for Onconova Therapeutics, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways and consolidating right below its 50-day moving average for the last few weeks. This consolidation pattern is occurring right after shares of ONTX recently spiked sharply higher from its low of $4.10 to its high of $5.52 a share. Shares of ONTX are now trending within range of breaking out of that consolidation pattern and potentially heading higher.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in ONTX if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average of $5.09 a share and then once it takes out some more key overhead resistance levels at $5.24 to $5.52 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 203,756 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then ONTX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.27 to $7 a share.

Traders can look to buy ONTX off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $4.75 to right around $4.50 a share. One can also buy ONTX off strength once it starts to take out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

The Company operations department is responsible for maintaining the continuity between the customer needs and Heartland ability to meet those needs by communicating customer expectations to the fleet management group. They are charged with development of customer relationships, ensuring service standards, coordinating proper freight-to-capacity balancing, trailer asset management, and daily tactical decisions pertaining to matching the customer demand with the appropriate capacity within geographical service areas. They assign orders to drivers based on well-defined criteria, such as driver safety and United States Department of Transportation (the DOT) compliance, customer needs and service requirements, on-time service, equipment utilization, driver time at home, operational efficiency, and equipment maintenance needs. Fleet management is r! esponsible for driver management and development. Their responsibilities include meeting the needs of the drivers within the standards that have been set by the organization and communicating the requirements of the customers to the drivers on each order to ensure successful execution. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

For this week's round of "Better Know a Stock," I'm going to take a closer look at Heartland Express (NASDAQ: HTLD  ) .

    What Heartland Express does
Heartland Express is a short-to-medium-haul truckload carrier of general commodities within the United States. It primarily is responsible for shipping automotive parts, retail goods, paper products, and packaged food.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Heartland Express (HTLD) has dropped 2.2% to $19.12 after it was cut to Hold from Buy at Stifel Nicolaus.

Allergan (AGN) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

Heartland Express Inc.(HTLD), a trucking firm steered by the Gerdin family, agreed to acquire another family controlled peer, Gordon Trucking Inc., in a transaction valued at about $300 million. Shares climbed 12% to $16.05 in light premarket trading.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Shares of Heartland Express (HTLD) rose today despite being cut by Stifel Nicolaus for valuation reasons.

    Bloomberg News

Shares of Heartland Express have gained 50% this year, trumping the 38% rise in Con-Way (CNW) and the 29% advance in J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) but lagging Old Dominion Freight Lines (ODFL) and Swift Transportation (SWFT).

That big gain was enough for Stifel’s John Larkin say no mas and cut his rating on Heartland Express. They explain why:

Downgrading from Buy to Hold as the company’s shares appear fully and fairly valued. In fact, shares have recently traded through our 12-month fair value estimate of $19 (or 16.0x our 2015 EPS estimate of $1.15 plus ~$0.68 per share NPV of future cash tax benefits).

Rating change is primarily valuation based as well as from our view that most transportation equities are trading ahead of the still mediocre underlying freight market fundamentals.

BB&T’s Thomas Albrecht and team, who upgraded Heartland Express to Buy from Hold yesterday, explain why they think the stock will do just fine regardless of the economy:

Heartland is an intriguing play upon both a slow-growth economy and a rapidly growing one (along with tight capacity). Many carriers are only able to thrive in the latter environment. With HTLD we believe that even in a sluggish economy it has a self-generating EPS story through the integration and growth of Gordon. Q3’13, a very difficult quarter for TL carriers, saw HTLD post a 79.3% OR versus 83.3%.

The timing of the Gordon deal seems ideal, similar to the Great Coastal acquisition in mid-2002. Back then the TL market was stabilizing, but had yet to really take off, which occurred in the back half of 2003. Those 4-5 quarters allowed HTLD to assess customers, integrate operations, consolidate facilities and get ready for the next cycle. By the time that occurred HTLD was ready to take advantage of the capacity

Top Consumer Stocks For 2016: Vera Bradley Inc.(VRA)

Vera Bradley, Inc., through its subsidiary, Vera Bradley Designs, Inc., engages in the design, production, marketing, and retail of functional accessories for women under the ?Vera Bradley? brand. Its products include a range of handbags, accessories, and travel and leisure items. The company sells its products to independent retailers located in the United States, as well as to national retailers and third party e-commerce sites. As of January 29, 2011, Vera Bradley, Inc. sold its products directly through 35 full-price stores, 4 outlet stores, verabradley.com, and an annual outlet sale in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The company was founded in 1982 and is headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

    Wednesday
Vera Bradley (NASDAQ: VRA  ) cracks open its suitcase for its quarterly report on Wednesday. The maker of stylish luggage and other travel accessories has shed more than half of its value since peaking two years ago, but it's starting to turn heads again. Revenue and earnings per share climbed 17% and 19%, respectively, last year. As the global economy begins picking up and fashion-forward travelers begin upgrading their suitcases, things should continue to improve here.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

My first earnings short-squeeze play is designer, producer and retailer of functional accessories for women Vera Bradley (VRA), which is set to release numbers Wednesday after the market close. Wall Street analysts, on average, expect Vera Bradley to report revenue of $124.81 million on earnings of 32 cents per share.

Just this morning, Lazard Capital said it expects Vera Bradley's second quarter results to miss guidance and consensus estimates and reiterates a sell rating on the stock with a $16 price target. The firm also said the company's third quarter outlook will miss estimates due to sales below plan and promotions above plan.

The current short interest as a percentage of the float Vera Bradley is extremely high at 55.2%. That means that out of the 21.61 million shares in the tradable float, 11.09 million shares are sold short by the bears. The bears have also been increasing their bets from the last reporting period by 5.4%, or by about 565,000 shares. If the bears get caught pressing their bets into a bullish quarter, then shares of VRA could easily rip higher post-earnings.

From a technical perspective, VRA is currently trending below both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bearish. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last month and change, with shares falling from its high of $26.33 to its intraday low of $18.67. During that move, shares of PBY have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action.

If you're bullish on VRA, then I would wait until after its report and look for long-biased trades if this stock manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at $20.09 a share with high volume. Look for volume on that move that hits near or above its three-month average action of 423,263 shares. If that breakout hits, then VRA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its 50-day moving average at $21.79 or its 200-day moving average of $23.

Best Oil Companies To Buy Right Now

On this day in economic and business history...

The fifth month of 1911 is often remembered for the landmark dissolution of the legendary Standard Oil Trust, a judgment which put forth a standard of "reasonableness" in assessing the size and competitive efforts of massive companies. What's often forgotten is that Standard Oil was not the only trust in the government's crosshairs during the 1911 session. On May 29, 1911 -- just before its annual recess -- the Supreme Court dissolved the American Tobacco Trust, using the same standard of reasonableness it had set weeks earlier against Standard Oil.

American Tobacco was founded in 1890 by James B. Duke, who pioneered the use of mechanical cigarette-rollers and thus gained a level of control over his industry similar to that of oil-industry counterpart John D. Rockefeller. Duke already controlled roughly 40% of the cigarette industry by the time he founded American Tobacco, and his control only grew as the trust absorbed hundreds of smaller competing firms. This made it a logical choice to become one of the Dow Jones Industrial Average's (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) 12 founding stocks, alongside several other notable trusts of the late 1890s. Despite the rapid growth of the tobacco industry following Duke's use of machine rollers, American Tobacco held onto its market lead right up to its dissolution: Two decades after its founding, the company still controlled between 75% and 80% of the tobacco industry, compared to Standard Oil's 65% share of the oil market on the eve of its breakup.

I'm speaking of Forum Energy Technologies (NYSE: FET  ) . The company, now with a $2.72 billion market capitalization, was formed in August 2010 through the roll-up of five more specialized members of the services sector. Its initial public offering occurred in the second quarter of 2012, and its shares have risen by 60% in the past year.

Another issue that Varco has to face is the specter of increasing competition. Cameron International (NYSE: CAM  ) has arisen as a big player in the drilling and production systems space, with a particular emphasis on subsea applications like blowout preventers. With Cameron sporting a recent partnership with Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , the combination will have both the expertise and the financial resources to challenge Varco in that niche. More broadly, up-and-coming Forum Energy (NYSE: FET  ) has sought to emulate Varco's broad-based services menu, offering remotely operated vehicles for deepwater inspection and construction as well as pipe and cementing materials and a range of subsea systems and equipment. Forum has posted solid results in its brief history, taking steps to continue its fast growth trajectory.

Tesoro Corporation (TSO) last month reported second quarter 2014 net income of $224 million, or $1.70 per diluted share compared to net income of $227 million, or $1.64 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2013.

Energy and Utilities: Tesoro Corp. (NYSE: TSO) is a bold call as the refining sector has been hammered. As spreads start to widen back out, this may be a very intriguing contrarian play for investors. Credit Suisse has a huge $65 target, while the consensus is right in line at $65 as well. Investors are paid a 2.2% dividend. A trade up to the target would represent a 53% gain for investors. Tesoro closed Tuesday at $43.10.

    3. Tesoro (NYSE: TSO  )
While most oil-related stocks have taken it on the chin in a big way in 2015, refiners like Tesoro have welcomed oil's plunge, at least temporarily, with open arms.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Yesterday, Tesoro Corp. (TSO) sold a bunch of assets to Tesoro Logistics (TLLP) for $650 million, the second “drop-down,” or sale of assets by a parent company to a partnership.

    Reuters

The Wall Street Journal has the details:

Tesoro Logistics LP, a company spun off in 2011 by oil refiner Tesoro Corp., agreed to pay its former parent $650 million to acquire Los Angeles assets that include two marine terminals and a pipeline system.

The company, which expects to close on the deal in the current quarter, said it will fund the deal using mostly cash, as well as about $65 million in equity. In a separate statement Monday, Tesoro Logistics said it was offering at least 6.3 million common units, with proceeds to be used to fund the deal.

Cowen’sSam Margolin assesses where Tesoro Corp. is now and its other drop-down opportunists:

Operationally, TSO continues to benefit from wide Bakken crude discounts, with the Clearbrook hub currently priced at a $14/bbl discount to WTI. During 3Q, TSO realized a gross refining margin of $21/bbl in its mid-con segment, vs refineries with Cushing price exposure in the $11/bbl-$15/bbl range. We expect similar outperformance in the current
    period…

The completion of the Vancouver, WA rail terminal in 1Q14 should provide additional drop down opportunities early next year. Comped to the metrics of the Anacortes rail terminal drop, the 125,000 Vancouver terminal could realize a drop down price of over $450MM, with upside in an expansion scenario. We expect TSO to remain a regular provider of cash catalysts through its capital project backlog and aggressive utilization of the TLLP vehicle.

Shares of Tesoro have gained 1.9% to $56.42, besting Phillips 66′s (PSX) 1.5% rise to $68.22, Hollyfrontier’s (HFC) 0.1% drop to $46.19 and Valero Energy’s (VLO) 0.,1% dip to $42.86. Tesoro Logistics has dropped 6% to $49.82.
